is now in. mitt romney slightly ahead of rick santorum. but it's going to be difficult for rick santorum to catch up by all accounts. 38% for romney. 37% for santorum. it's a significant lead right now. we'll see what's going on. let's take a look and see what happened in oklahoma. earlier in the night 99% of the vote is in. rick santorum wins in oklahoma with 34%. romney coming in second, 28%. gingrich, third. ron paul with only 10%. tennessee, another important win for rick santorum tonight. 37% going for santorum, 28% for romney. 24% for gingrich. only 9% for ron paul. let's take a look at alaska though. within the past few seconds the caucuses were winding down in alaska. there's no votes officially counted yet in alaska. we're going to be updating you right now -- we'll be uprighting you on what's going on in alaska. 24 delegates at stake in alaska. you get a sense of what's happening, the winners and the losers. look at this. ten states, romney so far has won four. in virginia, vermont, massachusetts and idaho. those are all romney wins. rick santorum's having a pretty good night a
>> tonight, mitt romney and rick santorum divide the super tuesday spoils. romney scoring wins in vermont, virginia, massachusetts, idaho and the night's biggest battleground, ohio. >> we're going to take your vote and take that victory all the way to the white house. >> santorum claiming victory in tennessee, oklahoma and north dakota. >> this was a big night. we have won in the west, the midwest and the south. and we're ready to win across this country. >> republicans in ten states have their say. hundreds of delegates are being awarded tonight. will the gop field change in any big way once the super tuesday dust settles? this campaign isn't over. more than half the states still haven't voted and no one has the gop nomination locked up yet. >>> and welcome to the special edition of "ac 360." in ohio, win colossal cliffhanger. went to the early hours but cnn is now projecting ohio will go to mitt romney. the state now up on the map in romney red along with massachusetts, vermont, virginia, and idaho. rick santorum in purple scoring victories in north dakota, oklahoma and tennessee. newt
, this is a very significant night for rick santorum. just when so many of the so-called experts were saying romney had it all but done, not is fast. >> could romney lock it up or another revival for newt gingrich. he loses in the two south states. he says he's staying in. now the questions are can santorum find a path to challenge romney? it would be easier if gingrich gets out. the math, the rules, the history. everything tells you it's still romney over the long hall into may and june. but you know what? our politics have been outside the rules. we elected our first african-american president. the tea party movement came out of nowhere. so let's watch. santorum's going to puerto rico. then we have a big primary in illinois. back to the midwest where if you look at the demographics, should be a romney state. >> puerto rico is this coming sunday. >> huge. >> and then illinois is a week from now on tuesday. >> i think i need to go to cover it. >> in fairness to mitt romney, he's still away head in the delegate count. he's got more than all of the other candidates combined so far. >> and this isn't
" at 10:00. "piers morgan tonight" starts now. >> thanks, anderson. big night for mitt romney in illinois based on exit polls and early votes. romney is the winner by double digits. much more of that in a moment. but look at the numbers. romney in the lead at 54%. santorum at 28%. ron paul and gingrich a distant third and fourth. we're waiting on mitt romney to speak now and second place rick santorum will also be speaking. we'll look ahead to the next stop on the primary sale. louisiana on saturday. and maryland, wisconsin, and d.c. on april 3rd. cnn's top team, wolf blitzer and john king. and gloria borger and david gergen. promoted to new york tonight. >> happy to be here. >> let's start with wolf. looks like a big win for mitt romney. how significant is illinois to his general campaign? >> if he stays above 50% in this vote in illinois, it'll be very significant. illinois being a very important state because of its population, the diversity. it's a big state. a lot of delegates at stake. he's going to do really well in illinois. clearly come out with the most delegates. rick santorum,
." >>> tonight, gop death match. mitt romney says he's in it to win it. >> we're counting up the delegates for the convention. it looks good. we're counting down the days until november and that looks even better. >> rick santorum says he won't drop out. >> we're in this race to stay. >> what will it take for someone to nail this down? i'll ask campaign insiders how far they'll go to get the nomination. also a woman who knows exactly how tough it is to run for the white house. >> anything and everything can happen in a political race. having been there ourselves, don't count anybody out until the race is over. >> cindy mccain, her take on the race and her life outside of politics and a hot new movie "game change." >>> only in america. nap time for newt gingrich. the long cam has taken its toll. this is "piers morgan tonight." good evening. the big story tonight why can't the gop make up its mind? mitt romney won the key state of ohio last night but barely. he took the top spot in the total of six super tuesday states but he's quite a long way from sewing up the nomination. he put a positiv
, santorum with 34%, 18,594. 27% for romney, also 27% for gingrich, a close contest for second place in oklahoma right now with 15%, now 16% of the vote in. ron paul coming in third. but rick santorum, we project is the winner, is the winner in oklahoma. earlier, we projected he's the winner in tennessee. ohio is still very very close. we have not been able to make a projection. look how close it is with 20% of the vote in ohio in right now. 38% for santorum. he's almost 2,000 votes ahead of mitt romney with 37%. 88,111 for santorum, 96,159 for romney. 35,332, 15% for gingrich, only 8% for ron paul. this is with 20% of the vote in but the news right now is that rick santorum we project wins oklahoma. here are the states as they're up. right now, we projected three wins for mitt romney, virginia, vermont and massachusetts. two wins for santorum, oklahoma and tennessee. one win for newt gingrich in georgia. we're waiting for ohio. three more states getting ready at 10 p.m. eastern, a little bit less than an hour from now, two of those will be closing the polls in idaho, north dakota, a
big. if you look at this group, 30 to 50,000, he won 49% to romney's 21%. newt gingrich did better than mitt romney in this category. go to the lowest end group here and look at this, 65% to 13%. sure, mitt romney won a little bit, but down here his win not so impressive. 46% to santorum's 31%. when you are talking about one of the state's in the country with some of the lowest per capita income, winning with people that make more than $200,000 doesn't get you very far. the darker color indicates places where people have the highest median income. as you can see, there weren't that many that would fall in to a category that romney might have been able to do well with and as you saw from the previous map he did not do well with them. so a tough night on the economy. one more thing that is interesting here. you mentioned it earlier this evening. let's go past this and look at the issue of education. because this is something where mitt romney has tended to do well, the more educated people are. louisiana, as a state, does not have as many people with college degrees or beyond college
, 48%. gingrich got the sikd number. romney comes in here at 22%, tied with gingrich. but still a massive lead for santorum. even bigger when you go down here to the under 30,000. look at that. santorum, 64%. romney tied with ron paul at 12%. the only area in which mitt romney won was in people who made $200,000 or more. and look at this. even in that area he has a substantial lead, but only 45% to 31%. that's simply not enough to overcome what santorum did in all the other categories, especially if you look at the state over here in terms of median income. i'm going to pull this out. the darker parishes here are the ones where people make more money. and here's the problem. even if mitt romney's winning there, look at the size of these. here's assumption parish. less than half a percent. this is the biggest one. 2.3% of the population. right next to it st. helena parish, less than .2%. you can find another big one. monroe, less than .3%. this is the reason we're able to make this projection, don, but not just this factor but many others. when you lk at the economy alone, you ca

at the turnout here, you look at the voters who came i'll ask what it will take for mitt romney to nail down the nomination as rick santorum continues to challenge. and the woman behind the campaign surge, karen santorum. what she thinks of charges that her husband is anti-women. >> it makes me really sad that the media tries to do that to him. they try to make it look like he's something that he's not. rick is a great guy. he's completely supportive of women. he's surrounded by a lot of very strong women. and i think women have nothing to fear when it comes to contraceptives. he will do nothing on that issue. >> we begin tonight with our big story, an exclusive interview with anne romney. and the candidate's wife joins me now. tell me this. it's been a rough old campaign. everyone accepts that. i always think most of them are anyway. but it's been especially rough. and i suppose one of the things that's leveled against your husband a lot is he's not very lovable. people don't seem to fall for him in the way that they did with barack obama, for instance, when he got elected. you obviously ha
